put the needles down and step away from the knitting

Apparently, I am to stupid to be allowed to knit.  I am attempting to knit up Quinn; a beautiful cabled bag with wonderfully written directions, which I am unable to read.  Quinn starts out by knitting a top band then picking up stitches around and knitting down.  I have now knit the top band twice and have to rip it and knit it again, because of my own stupidity.  *sigh*

For now I am putting Quinn aside and will pick it up again later.  I need to work on something else for a while to prove that I am actually able to read directions and finish a project.  Socks, maybe I’ll work on some socks.

  1. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with Quinn! If there’s anything I can do to clarify things, please let me know. It’s the first pattern I’ve ever written and I’m sure there are parts of it that are weird/confusing/wrong/etc.

  2. Oh, no, the pattern is very well written! I just seem to have lost the ability to count . . . it goes 1, 2 , 3 , 4; not 1, 2, 4. The first time I totally messed up the provisional cast-on (dropped stitches, etc) and had to rip, the second; I cast on, knit 11 repeats, 3 needle bind-off. Umm, yeah, I forgot step 3: knit 10 rows of repeat. Like I said, great pattern. I, apparently, just can’t read.

I bought 2 balls of Cascade 220 Superwash, and since this is for a gift I will knit it again. If it were just for me I would rip out the cast off, knit the missing rows and go on.

  3. Start breathing! And don’t call yourself stupid – where would we be if everytimr something go wrong we call ourself stupid! You are great knitter! Remember that! After good nap everything will clear!

  4. Oh, poor you – I know what you’re going through! Sometimes it seems as if we’ve un-learned everything we’ve ever known, even the easiest things… Best thing to do is as you did – putting the project away for a while, doing something else, perhaps something as mindless as possible, and only then picking up the other project again. And you’ll see, Quinn will work out perfectly then!
